Heading on a Northern European cruise soon? Discover our top tips to help you maximise your time in port.
First up: Hamburg
Hamburg is one of Germany’s major cities and is crossed by hundreds of canals. When arriving by cruise ship, you will need to take a shuttle to head into the city centre; it’s definitely too far to walk! Some cruise lines offer this for free, whereas for some there will be a surcharge. The city is easy to walk around or you could jump on a bus, bicycle or ferry.

The City Hall (Rathaus) is the heart of Hamburg and it’s here you will be able to capture iconic photos. Rathausmarkt Square is also home to the world famous Christmas market and enormous Christmas tree. Did you know Hamburg actually has 30 Christmas markets across the city? At the main market you may even be lucky enough to see the main man himself fly over your head, being pulled along by his reindeer!
Visit one of Hamburg’s most impressive landmarks: Elbphiharmonie. The glassy construction resembles a hoisted sail, a wave, iceberg or quartz crystal sat upon an old brick warehouse. The building holds three venues including The Great Concert Hall. You may even be lucky enough to catch the window cleaners hanging around like Spider Man!

Another fascinating piece of architecture is St Nikolai’s Church: once the tallest building in the world, this abandoned church is now a monument following the destruction of WWII. Visitors can take the lift to the top of the spire to take in views of the city. Try to time it so you can hear the bells being rung, it really is something quite special.
