Port Experience: Naples

Naples, the gateway to so many bucket list attractions including the Amalfi Coast, Pompeii and the island of Capri. However, if you’re looking for something a bit closer to the port and to take in the city of Naples then ‘Underground Naples’ is the trip for you.

After visiting Naples a few times previously on other cruises, we were looking for a different experience that was close to the port. A relatively short walk of around 25 minutes, allows you to take in the streets of Naples before arriving at the entrance to the start of your underground experience.

Pre-booking your tickets enables you to skip the line and as the tours happen in different languages, announcements will be made when a tour is starting. We were early for our tour so grabbed a drink from one of the nearby bars whilst we waited. We paid €13 each for the tour.

When it’s your turn head to the left side of the queue, get your ticket scanned and head down underground to meet your guide for the next 90 minutes. After a brief explanation of the safety protocols and what the tour entails you start your journey under the city by taking 200+ steps down. It’s not as cold as you may think down there in August so a jacket or jumper can be optional.

We don’t want to give too much away but your guide will explain the long history of the tunnels. Did you know they were first built by ancient Greeks to channel water through the city? Later on they were used as bomb shelters during World War Two. As your journey continues, you’ll squeeze through tight passages and see where residents of the city would drop their receptacles down to source fresh water.

The tour ends at a hidden amphitheatre and be prepared for a surprise for how to get there.

Overall we loved this experience and the guide really made it engaging and entertaining throughout. If you like the sound of the tour you can book directly here.

We booked the trip via Get Your Guide ahead of our departure from the U.K. Using the app enables you to go paperless and have your tickets on your phone. Any links you click in this blog are affiliate links and we will receive a small commission if you book via these links.
